Voice and Data Options
(February 19, 2015 / Updated March 14, 2015)

I have a 16GB iPhone 5C model A1456 (CDMA/US/Japan) with Sprint. It uses a Nano-SIM card. It works just fine although I do not tax its capabilities by any stretch of the imagination and I do not pull a lot of data with it (at least not via the cellular link). I also have an older iPad 2. It is wifi only but it works just fine and is great for apps that are better suited to a large screen (like email, web pages, and maps).

I'm going to Japan for three months. What are my options for voice and data connectivity?

Here are the options I considered:

  1. Use my iPhone in international mode
  2. Rent a phone in Japan
  3. Rent a SIM card in Japan
  4. Buy a pre-paid phone in Japan
  5. Rent a mobile (pocket) wifi hotspot

Executive Summary

  1. As luck would have it, Sprint is running a special $5 Japan roaming add-on for voice, text and data. For $5/month it provides unlimited voice, text, and data while you are in Japan. You use your phone in GSM/UMTS mode (not CDMA) and you can make local (in Japan) calls and international (to U.S.) calls for free. Assuming this all holds up to be true, it is a no-brainer choice.

  2. Renting a phone may be viable for a short trip (1 - 2 weeks) but is a bit expensive for a 3 month stay. Still, $283 for a basic phone (no data) from Rentafone Japan is not bad. If you just can't live without data, Global Advanced Communications can deliver the full package for $503.

  3. Renting a SIM card requires that your current phone be unlocked. Sprint unlocked my iPhone without any hesitation so this option is open to me. The range in pricing was a bit of a surprise but $61 for the Japan Travel SIM and Brastel Card is an outstanding price. For that price I can live without SMS (iMessage and LINE would cover the gap). Note that the Brastel Card works with any phone although I am not sure if the data recharge ability is exclusive to the Japan Travel SIM or not.

  4. Buying a pre-paid phone (actually buying a phone and a pre-paid card) turned out to be not be as good a deal as I thought it would. The cost of purchasing the phone is what kills it. One caveat on the estimates: I had a hard time finding a price for the Softbank Global Rental and au (KDDI) phones and ultimately pulled the price from their online stores. However, I am not sure if there is any difference between those prices and what you pay at the airport counter. That lack of information was frustrating.

  5. Renting a mobile wifi will provide a wifi connection for my iPhone and iPad while I am on the go. It won't get you any voice or SMS but it will get you data. If I did not have the Sprint deal or an unlocked iPhone, I would consider renting a basic phone for voice and a mobile wifi to provide data for the iPad.

The Gory Details

Each of the above options are explored in high level detail. I also take a swag at the cost of the given option. Fees and cost estimates are current as of Feb 19, 2015. Some minor fees are not listed or included in the swag cost but they are not enough to make any real difference. If you find any errors or misinformation, please contact me and I will correct asap.

For comparison purposes, I chose the following usage figures. I could probably get by with less than this but it is good enough for an estimate.

Total number of days 84 = 12 weeks (close enough to 3 months)
Total domestic minutes 180 15 mins/wk (I'm not a big talker)
Total international minutes 180 15 mins/wk - calls home
Total number of SMS text msgs sent 120 10 msgs/wk - by number of msgs, domestic only
Total number of SMS text msgs recv'd 120 10 msgs/wk - by number of msgs, domestic only
Total data usage in MB (not incl. SMS) 1200 100 MB/wk - via cellular system only
Currency exchange rate 117 ¥117 / $

The au website was a serious exercise in frustration. I had to really dig to find a price for the K012 phone and then did a double-take when I saw how high it was. This is just a very basic phone. If I missed something obvious, I would appreciate it if someone would let me know.

In the end

I will go with the Sprint add-on and take my iPhone. I also decided to get a mobile wifi from Japan Wireless for data connectivity for the iPad while I am out and about. The Sprint plan does not allow tethering and I prefer using the iPad for web searches and maps. As a backup option, I had Sprint unlock my phone so that I could install a local SIM card if I need to. Estimated cost: $256 (not including some taxes and minor fees).

Update: March 14, 2015

I set up the plan with Sprint and changed/verified the settings on my iPhone: Under Settings --> Cellular --> Roaming: Turned on both voice and data roaming but turned off International CDMA. Voice roaming is required and my plan allows unlimited data so it is okay to turn on data roaming. The plan requires you to use the GSM network and turning off International CDMA accomplished that. If you left CDMA turned on, the plan would not be in effect and you would pay full international rates (that was the one with cost of over $10K - make sure you get this setting right).

After going through immigration and customs at Chubu International Airport (Nagoya), I turned on my phone. For a minute or so it had no connection but then I got a text and saw that I was on the SoftBank network. The text said that to call a U.S. number, I had to dial +1-area code-number. Luckily, the iPhone takes care of all that dialing prefix stuff for you automatically. I was able to call my wife by just by pushing the usual contact button. No problem. Good connection. Texting worked fine both ways too.

One weird thing happened after I moved into my apartment. I was no longer able to call my wife and she could not call me. The connection would always fail. I tried dialing manually with all the various exit codes and country codes etc but nothing worked. The only thing that was different from when I successfully called in the airport is that now my phone is also connected into wifi in the apartment. As an experiment, I turned off the phone's wifi and dialed. It worked. Why wifi would cause such an interference I do not know. Even more strange, a friend called me and connected just fine even though I still had wifi enabled. Beats me. My wife and I use text and Facetime so it doesn't really matter.

Other than that, the phone is working great and I really appreciate having the unlimited data. I don't watch videos or anything data intensive but it allows me to use the Galileo Pro app to track my walks and I use Facebook Messenger and Line to communicate with my Japanese friends.

One final note, to call a number in Japan, I need to add the Japanese country code (ie, +81) and then the Japanese phone number. That isn't a problem and the call is free for me, but for someone in Japan to call me would be an international call for them and that could be expensive. That is why I added the Facebook Messenger and Line apps to allow free communication with my friends. If a hotel or delivery service needs to call you, it is a little more unpleasant for them. If you need to have people in Japan call you, keep this in mind.
